Done in my Fall 2021 Typography class, this project was meant to challenge us to illustrate a unique cover for a well-known story while focusing on the technique of typography with minimal imagery. I chose the classic Shakespearean tragedy, Romeo and Juliet as I felt familiar with the story and knew it would be challenging to create a modern design for one of the most popular stories in English literature of all time.
I wanted this cover to be simple yet eye-catching with bold colors that would reflect the tragic impact of the events within the story. A main focus for me were the main lovers of the tragedy and the ways in which they die in the end. I used the dagger and the poison bottle to reflect the main duo and to reflect the fateful undertones of the story. Black and white were used to symbolize the contrast between the two households within Romeo and Juliet, and red was used to symbolize romance and blood.
